"Killer Whale Pod"

   Hello again,

I'd like to show everyone a piece that I have done for my own portfolio. After a bit of a rocky start ( trying to choose a drawing surface), I was quite pleased with the way it turned out. The subject is a small pod of Killer Whales. It was done on 2 ply Bristol and is roughly 8x12 in size. I would enjoy any feedback on this one both positive and negative.

Thank you,

Kevin

   Nice Orcas Kevin,
also like the reflecting water. Good drawing, has a nice early morning feel to it. Did you see these/photograph them yourself?

   Thanks Jim and Linda

Orcas are close and fairly accessible to us here, but this time I used someone else's photo. I'm lucky enough to live on Vancouver Island off the west coast of Canada. Beautiful spot. I hope to do many more pictures of animals native to this area.

I really love this Kevin. The flow of the broken water, the gentle movement of the foreground ripples have a wonderful reality about them. As Linda found, the whole drawing gives me that early morning feeling - I can feel the stillness and the "swish" of these bodies parting the water as though it was oil.

Even the composition has a perfect balance.

   Lovely work Kevin,
I admire the way you've portrayed the water.
It seemed to be a photograph when I first looked so I would say you've achieved what you were aiming for and in brilliant syle.

   Thanks everyone,

It feels good to know that you all really like my work. It means a lot coming from a group that is made up of fellow artists.
Mike, I'm glad you get a calming feeling from this piece. I also like the reflections of the overcast skies in this one. It gives it a nice brightness rather than the overall dark cast that you normally see in whale pictures.
I'm glad everyone enjoyed the water because I really enjoyed drawing it! }>
I'm not sure where everyone is from, but Mike my next piece is from your neck of the woods. It is going to be of a British Robin in memory of a family member. I will post it as a Work in Progress soon and hope to hear lots of input from all.

Thanks again,

Kevin

I look forward to your Robin, Kevin. We have at least one living here all year round. They're such friendly little chaps - especially when I'm gardening. And one built a nest in my workshop last year so I got to know him very well.

I'll be right over with my camera !
I've gathered all my reference material and I'm underway. I've noticed though that our robins here in Canada are quite a bit different then yours overseas. Since I only have the photos to go by and I have not seen the real thing, feedback will be a huge help to me on this one.

Thanks,
Kevin
