""Little Angels"........Not!"
Made up this composition from a photo of two cocker puppies and one of my shoes. Never done a shoe before! Used exclusively B and HB mechanical pencils on Utrecht smooth bristol, 9x12. Now I need to decide on a fore/background......suggestions? Need your expert criticisms on these little "Yanks"
In the prelim drawing I noticed the nose was out of place on the puppy on the left. So I just started with the eye and worked my way out. It came out more like the photo than the one on the right. Ever tried that before?
Sorry about the grainey-ness of the scan. Sometime I've got to learn about that thang...

Shirl this is a totally cute drawing i envy your ability to combine subjects like that,,..around the mouth area i was wondering...how did you do that?...is that one layer of a hard pencil,,,then covered with a soft pencil?... i thought of a great name for this drawing ,how about "Size K-9" too corny? ...

Wonderful Shirl!
I really like the way that you've drawn a realistic shoe but in a way that doesn't distract from the pups.
And the pups themselves are pretty well faultless. I'm not a fan of American Cockers but these two are packed full of character. You have the hair texture and detailing spot on.
What more can I say -- I greatly admire this drawing and the consistent effort you've put into it.

Thanks all! This was surely fun, albeit a little tedious with the hair, but I'm learning patience! I think using the mechanical pencils makes me slow down and do a better job.
Absolute, I did as you said, used the B for the darkest, graduated out with B and HB, and then went over that out to the edge with a 3H (love the 3H). To get the ends of the hair, I went "up" with the B from the dark areas. I am going to try Mike's method also.
Here's a closer look:

Shirl them little guys really are cute....they put the taco bell dog to shame !!...... just as a side note i have about 20 different kinds of paper and lately ive been checking out a cheap brand that i really like,....its crayola water color paper,..i know it sounds horrible but i like it better then the strathmore,,,i have bristol smooth too.wich i dont like a whole lot....but just for the heck of it you should pick some up and see what you think,.i got mine for christmas but i think its only like 3 bucks for a ton of it.its so easy to work with especially on learge smooth looking areas you wont see any need for blending on this paper..

Hi Shirl, 'yanks' are just gorgeous! they do look like little angels!, so soft..... and all that 'puppy breath'. The mechanical pencils seem to be working well for you. I love the sheen on the coats!. You've done a great job, have you decided on a background yet .....one suggestion could be a cloth that looks like they've dragged around .............also, great work on the shoe, the different textures between shoe and pups work well! 7. "Cute Puppies!"
Well, good lord, how cute could they be?
Hi Shirl,
You are a very good mechanic at this. Wonderful work. I think it's finished, personally. Spray it!
Just a question on the left one. Was it everyone's decision to not show the white patch? Not a criticism, just curious.
Bravo!
