"a wolf by jim"

Hello mike, i think this is an exellent idea, with the unlimited number of animals to choose from, the textures and shapes can really be challenging to say the least.,and everyone has there own little tricks that make things look more realistic,im anxious to see and read up on as much as possible,.....one weak spot i have is feathers"...for me i sometimes end up with a leaf instead of a feather....so eventually i want to try a bird of prey...mabye a hawk or an owl?..im getting ready to go looking for something to start on....i didnt know this forum was up until i seen JD's message in the other forum, but here is a wolf i just finished..
i like to talk about what im doing as much as i like drawing..so on the next thing i start on ...ill do just as much talking as drawing as i go step by step...and hopefully people feel free to ad critic and advice.
your advice on negative drawing at your site was very helpfull with this wolf...i use to just try to create short wolf hair by following the general direction....so i had a much different strategy for this one.

This works really well for me Jim. I like the way that it's not perfectly groomed, that the hair has a defined texture and a great feeling of density and depth.

But what works for me above all is that you've saved your brightest white for the eye's highlights. Wherever your eye begins with this piece it just has to home in on that sharp, attentive eye.

Did you plan to place the eye dead centre or did it just happen that way?

Please do that Jim. It's only by sharing our motivations and techniques that we will all learn to appreciate and understand each others work and, as a result, we cannot fail to learn and improve.

I'm looking forward to it. Any idea yet of what it's going to be?

   Hi Jim,
I love your wolf, you picked a great medium to him in, what did you use? Looks like charcoal, something soft. What kind of paper?

I really like contrast and you didn't hold back!
Can't wait to see more,

Toby--thanks,..im getting ready to start another one of a lynx to show the madness of my theory:)
------------------------------
Mike..i lucked out with his eye coming out where it did..i didnt even notice that until you mentioned it...i looked for some kind of bird to start on ,but i couldnt find a good close up,..i found a linx that i thought was pretty cool looking it has a lot of deep contrast wich i think will make it easier for me to do hopefully.
---------------------------------
hello mary thanks for the reply and kind comments..it drives me to keep drawing...i used an ebony jet black extra smooth by sanford..wich is something i just discovered from this website from seeing another artist use one...its very dark.but doesnt really blend much..the paper is 80 lb strathmore 400,..the backside..cause its a little smoother.

Hi Jim, this is really good, he looks watchful and alert, also like the dark background behind the headplanes and the lightness below, it adds to the intensity of the image...

Nature is not something that can be seen by the eye alone- it lies also within the soul, in pictures seen by the inner eye.

I'm not sure that you did luck out Jim. In fact I think it's quite a positive point. sometimes it pays to break the rules and this is one of those times..... the eye grabs the attention and it's impossible not to be affected by its piercing stare.
