"white boxer"

Well here is the white boxer I have been working on.I finished it yesterday. She took about 4 hours drawing time. Also included is one I drew last night of a boxer I was just practicing on.I'm affraid I drew her nose area to long and the detail is not very sharp....welcome all critiques and comments..all help is welcome as I want to improve.

Here is another practice shot....I'm having trouble with the nose area...I can't seem to get a textured feel...I'm using vellum here...the others were on strathmore 300 series medium texture paper. Can you offer any suggestions.

I can't see a problem Vickie. Your style seems to be about form and solidity and expression, not about textures that require tight detailing.

Are you referring to the nose itself? If you are and you had attempted to give it the rough texture and broken surface that it has then I think it would have looked foreign to the rest of the drawing. To my mind you can go for form, as you have, or concentrate on textures (which you use to suggest form) but I'm not sure that you can mix the two styles successfully.

To me it looks like a good-looking Boxer and a creditable drawing.

Thanks Mike ...it was the nose ...I was trying to get a more textured look for the nose and not really concentrating on anything else.

Vicklyn i think you are being too hard on yourself because i think your level of realism and form are the things that greeting cards are made of,especially the top 2 you posted......when i look at greeting cards that i see at the store i cant help but wonder how some of them made it on the shelf,...i think the buyers for hallmark need to stop into art- papa and take a look around.

Can you post an enlargement of the nose? It's not possible to see what you are attempting in the last post.

The only suggestion that springs to mind (and one I use often when I'm unsure of how to reproduce a texture) is to draw in a series of tight circles. Just letting the circles show spots of white between them will begin to suggest a texture with highlights. And often you can hit upon the answer somewhere during the progress then you finally know what you are doing.

Here is the larger nose Mike...it is just 8b blended because I couldn't get the look I was after.I want to blame it on the fact that the drawing was so small (4x6") but I think I should have been able to get a textured feel to it.

Jim thank you for those kind words...I do beat myself up alot....I am my worst critic.

Hi vickie, your drawings are great, the only comment I'll make, is one for future reference, in your 'profile shot, the muzzel is level, a boxer ( good head), inclines slightly upward towards the nose. this will help give proper breed expression. Lynne

Thanks Lynne ...it wasn't til I was finished that I noticed it as well...that's what happens when I finish without a break from the drawing.Oh well at least it was just for practice. "sigh"
