"Stippling"

   Hi Everyone,

I am new and it was suggested that I post a work in progress for viewing. It is a stipple of two pug puppies and has taken considerable time to get this far. I would appreciate any comments and will update the picture when I have done some more.

Sorry about the quality of the photo, it is a digital photo only,

thanks Jenny.

Hi Jenny,

Welcome to the forum! Good to see you here and I'm glad to see your found your way without a map this time

Is there any chance that we could see this a bit bigger? It's looking good but I don't think we can really appreciate your hard work properly at this scale.

There's a 70KB limit so be sure to save it as greyscale, which cuts the file size down by two thirds so you can post quite large images.

I'm glad you chose Pugs - I have rather a soft spot for them

MIKE

   HI Jenny!

Welcome to ArtPappa - you will be having a lot of fun here! I love the pugs, stippling is soooooo time consuming. These two really work well as a stippled work, their fur translates nicely to this technique. And they have a real personality coming out.

but tell me... do you ever get spots before your eyes????

Hi Jenny, your stippling technique looks really good - I feel like I can reach out and touch them - especially the pug on the left. I'd love to see a close up of your work. Love the rolls and wrinkles which is so characteristic of pugs. It looks great so far!

   Hi Jenny,

these are looking brilliant. I may sound a bit ignorant, but could you explain what stippling is? It certainly has a great effect....

I'm looking forward to seeing this finished.

Becky

I have tried to send these pugs through but the scanned image doesn't do the original justice at all because I had to condense the file so much.

I use a .25 technical pen and each dot is done one at a time. I saw a german shepherd (full body) done this way in a book and immediately thought that this is for me.

thanks for the nice comments, Jenny.

   Hi Becky,

stippling is a series of dots. There is no line work at all and the whole drawing is made up entirely of ink dots. Obviously the darker the area, the more dots are used. I do have trouble with my pen in that when I haven't worked on them for a while, the ink tends to either not come out at all or forms a drop on the end of the nib - which involves more time as I have to dab the end with a tissue continually.

thanks for your thoughts.
