"Elephant"

   Hello again,

I agree totally with everyone's comments about the difficulty of rendering hair/fur, however on this one I learned that no or little hair and lots of wrinkles could be just as hard! It's funny how each dip and valley has a life of it's own. I told you I dealt with North American wildlife but I did this for another artist friend of mine as a sort of art exchange. It was 11x14 on 110 lbs drawing paper and took around 48.5 hours to complete. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Kevin

One (out of many) of the things I really like about this Kevin is the way that you've offset the clarity of the elephant against the softness of the background.

The background serves its purpose in giving the elephant a "world" in which to live while at the same time emphasising the animal's sharpness and solidity and giving it a real presence.

Beautiful! If we had a big cheering smilie I'd use it!!

   Oh! Oh!
I love elephants! Love YOUR elephant.
And in spite of your comment Kevin, it looks like you enjoyed drawing every valley and fold.
Now how about a rhino?

   Hello everyone,

I'd just like to send out a word or two of thanks to everyone here. Your positive feedback is very nice indeed. It's a good lifter of ones confidence to recieve such comments. To bad I didn't have more drawings completed. I could pull one out when a drawing is going badly and throw it onto this board to lift my spirits.
I'm glad Mike that you share my feelings on the background. It's sometimes nice just to hint on the location of where the subject might be. I find forcing the background out of focus forces the subject forward.
Sorry to tell you Collin and everyone else waiting to see more wildlife, being a pencil rookie i'm just about out of finishes pieces. I have one more wildlife piece to scan then it's over to J.D.Hillberrys board for some non wildlife portraits. I hope you will all stop over there as well to take a peek.

Thanks again, Kevin }>

   To answer your question Colin,
I blend with a number of things depending on the effect that I'm after. If I'm wanting to blend an area as well as lighten it a bit I'll use a chamois. Just like the one you use to dry your car. It seems to pull the graphite off the board quite nicely. For general blending I use stumps. I've heard them called by different names but basically they are those tightly rolled sticks of paper. If I want to darken an area and blend it I'll use a tortillon or a cotton swab with some graphite on the end.
I hope this answers your question and helps out a bit.

Kevin

so what's the difference between a stump and a tortillon? I thought they were the same thing?

Sorry, may I jump in here? Tortillons are hollow and made out of tightly coiled paper. Stumps are solid, much heavier, and have a different blending effect - rougher than tortillons. }>
