"The three kittens"

Hello all, I have been reading this animal drawing forum with great interest. Below is my very first attempt at drawing animals, especially fur. I used graphite (3B to 4H), H charcoal for the darkest fur markings, and vine charcoal for the shelf they're sitting on.

Of the many mistakes I made while doing this, the biggest one was blending. I ran out of patience doing the hair and thought I could speed up the process by blending the hair out - huge mistake.

Any thoughts, suggestions and criticism are welcome. Brutal honesty is very much appreciated - I gotta start somewhere .

Hi Becca,
First attempt? pretty dern good! A tricky subject to start off with too, three lots of cute, cuddly fur.
One thought - (please know I am no cat expert, they make me itch so I haven't studied them greatly), is something of the shape of the face of the left kitten seems not quite right. Not sure what... perhaps the angle it is on? Don't quite know. But the rest of the drawing is very good. You have certainly caught the character and charm of the subject(s). My husband just came in and saw them on the screen and said... 'Awww. cute. they are good.'

Ahhhh, the old 'do I blend or not debate!' What I do, is when in doubt I don't... I go get a cup of tea (or glass of red), think about it, then decide. Mainly because fur/hair/feathers can get pretty tedious and sometimes you really just need a break. Often after a little while away from the drawing you come back refreshed, look at what you have done and say to yourself, 'hey thats pretty good', and continue on as before.

Hi Linda,

Thank you for your thoughts & comments, yes cats are a tricky subject for me too - I, too, am allergic to them so I must admire them from afar. Besides my german shepherds wouldn't appreciate a cat competing with them for my attention (cats are scooby-snacks to them!) This was drawn from a calendar, it just sort of caught my eye and I thought it'd make for a nice trial sketch.

Yes, the angle of the cat's face on the left does appear wrong. It is accurate to the reference pic but I guess it's a matter of drawing only exactly what you see vs. improving upon what you see. Since I am a newbie at drawing animals, I strictly went with what I saw (or thought I saw).

Since I've done a few people portraits recently, I guess blending got the best of me. I must exercise restraint when it comes to furry critters. Definitely a lesson learned!

Cute Becca...it may be blended but they still look furry...I have been practicing drawing my fluffy and she looks plain flat.

I have to say this is very good for your first attempt at an animal! Hair on one cat would be hard enough let alone three sitting side by side. I must agree with you as well patience is something which you must have lots of when doing hair. It can become boring after many hours of the same thing. Hair here hair there and trying to make them all stand out.
Good Job

Thanks Vickie and Kevin for your comments & feedback, it inspires me not to give up. I'm going to have to learn patience when it comes to fur - I barely have enough patience to finish hair in my portraits. After surviving this drawing, I have a newfound respect for nature & wildlife artists everywhere! I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I'm learning a lot from you all here. Thanks for your support!

I really appreciate hearing back from you.

Becca VERY Very nice, cats are taking over art papa!..i was wondering if you work from a graph or not?...the reason i ask is because i think if you took a photo of a close up of either a human or animal...just the head shot so its as big and clear as you can get it i think you would be surprised at what you can come up with, plus its fun to do,i do mean big too...where each eye is about 3/4 of a square big..at 1st they look strange if you arent use to working that learge,i havent been doing it that long myself,....but its just something cool to try and ive learned a lot from doing it.after seeing your work i dont see any reason why you couldnt do it,i think at least 50% of peoples problems at art papa are more PC then artistic, scanning and computer images are a total pain in the ***
take care

Hi absolute! I agree with you there, I know some of my problem is PC related especially since I don't have the proper equipment - I don't even own a printer. I did use a grid with this drawing because I'm very shakey on drawing animals accurately and I wanted to focus my time on their fur and facial features rather than worry about proportionality and perspective. I'm not familiar enough yet with their anatomy and unique characteristics to do it free-hand. It's unchartered, but very compelling, new territory to me.
