"My first cat"

Hello!

This is my first time drawing a cat and I would love to receive some feedback, comments on what seems wrong or anything.
I have been experiencing some "technical problems" with my computer, so I hope this one posts all right.

Best Wishes
Linda

THanks Colin!

Eggs, no kidding, It's a real struggle trying to create realistic looking fur! But, like you say "slow and steady wins the day!"

Thank you so much for your help on sizing my pictures. I will try that for my next post.

Take care
Linda

   Hi Linda,

she looks lovely and soft -what materials are you using? Charcoal? Can I suggest that the pupil of the cat's right eye could do with more definition.... (don't know if you've finished the eye or not).

she's very pretty - looks like a kitten. I'm ooking forward to seeing more

Sure is! But its kind fun too. I always have to tell myself that I am NOT drawing the fur or hair itself, but more the SHADOWS and highlights cast by the hairs. Also it helps to remember that hair is not a flat 2D line, but is a long thin 3D cylinder, so each hair really does have highlight and dark edge.

And of course hair can be easier than skin tones in one big way... know one else ever really knows that that kitten didn't REALLY have a bunch of dark fur there. Its a lot harder to 'fake' skin. Fur and hair can be much more forgving.

Hi Linda!

Thank you so much for this feedback. I'm a big admirer of your work! I' m gonna try and put your advice into practice - actually you're making me want to go draw some fur right now! I will use this to finish my kitten, that's for sure.

Thanks a bunch
Take care
Enia

Hi Rebecca!

Yes this is charcoal. I am playing with a little graphite on top of it right now, but the ones posted have just charcoal.

I totally agree about the eye... I'm working on it though. Soon I'll post it. Hopefully I'll get it!

THanks a lot!

This is coming along well, Enia. You're succeeding so well in suggesting or depicting detail with your charcoal that I have to ask what size is the original? I think this will help me better understand your techniques.

As a kitten it's gorgeous! You've captured that "wide-eyed innocent explorer" look perfectly. I've seen this so many times with my own cats - and I've had many over the years and have seven right now -- or seven and a half if you count Burt from next door who treats our house as a restaurant. Actually I don't blame him - he's known as "Fluffy" at home - not a good name for a tom cat!

How long has it taken you to get this far? And how well do you find the graphite works with the charcoal?

MIKE
