"Zebra"

Hiya guys.. Thought I'd post a drawing I did a while back.. I haven't been drawing for very long and just recently got into it when I discovered Hillberry's site and forum.. This Zebra was one of my first attempts.. It's huge, 2ft. * 3ft., done with pastel.. sorry for the poor image quality.. as it was too big to scan I had to snap a picture with a cheap digital camera. Feedback and critique are very welcome..

I like the look you have captured in the eye Duke...I have only tried pastel once and the guy who was showing me how to work the pastel told me you never blend...but I have seen in artist magizine that the artist do blend some...did you do some blending with this one?

Hi Duke, this is a really atmospheric piece and I love the placidity you've captured in the eye. Pastel scares me, but it looks like you've got a great smooth finish - almost looks like paint (but that could be the quality of the photo....).

One thing really does stick out for me on this though, and it's the neck. It is to straight and narrow - really need thickening and perhaps adding a subtle curve down in the direction of the chest. It also looks like you missed a stripe near the edge of the page, which looks a little odd when you compare it to the density of the stripes on the rest of its head and neck.

Becky.
