"Watson Portrait"

Hello to Mr. Sibley and all the folks in this forum
Let me introduce myself by saying my name is Kevin and I am an artist from Canada. I mainly deal with North American wildlife and pets as my subject matter. I have also done the odd persons portrait as a gift here and there. I am a big fan of Mr Sibleys work and I am glad that I have this opportunity for him and everyone else here to critic one of my works. This was a portrait I did of a family members dog. It is graphite on 2 ply bristol. The head is approx. 8x10 in size.

Thank you in advance
Kevin

Awsome drawing and very realistic!! How do you like drawing on the 2-ply Bristol? I'm trying to convince myself to start using it.

   Hi Kevin,
Good work! I quite enjoy the flop ear, it gives Watson such a distinctive personality. He also looks so soft I just want to give him a big hug....

I will refrain from any Sherlock Holmes and Watson jokes...though I was sorely tempted!

Can we see more of your work soon please!

Thank you to all who responded so far. You are all to kind in your comments.
To answer a couple questions, The drawing took about 40 hours to complete and yes I really like the Bristol surface to work on. It is nice and smooth but still takes the graphite well. The one down side to it is that it starts to break down after too much erasing. I am experimenting with different surfaces to find a happy medium. No pun intended.
I will put up more work if you all like under this forum as well as J.D. Hillberrys forum as some stuff is non-animal in nature. Sorry I don't have a web site at this time.
Thank you all again

Hi Kevin, WOW! I feel like I can reach out and scratch his head. You have a very nice style, he looks so real!

I'm a Canuck too - spring couldn't come soon enough!, and I've spent a lot of time doing portraits, but I'm also very interested in learning how to draw fur. and have recently attempted to draw some animals. I will post one here soon for comment...

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work

Quote I will refrain from any Sherlock Holmes and Watson jokes...though I was sorely tempted!

I won't!

"Watson" said Holmes, casually tossing his prized Stradivarius onto the couch "Come and see what I have just discovered on this electrical apparatus". "What is it?" asked Watson. "It's a Dell Dimension T600" replied Holmes "but let us not concern ourselves about that right now. I'm mean this!".

"It's a dog" said Watson, helpfully. "Yes, Watson" retorted Holmes "I can see it's a dog but what you fail to grasp is that it's a fiendishly clever Drawing of a dog." Watson was stunned into silence then, after a full minute, he quietly murmured "It is then the work of a Master." "Indeed, my old friend" said Holmes "Indeed it is."

Sorry! Unlike Linda I couldn't resist

Welcome to the forum, Kevin and thank you for showing us such a beautiful drawing. It was struck by it as soon as it began to unfold on my screen. The hair has a lovely texture - so well rendered that I can feel it's softness. And I particularly like the way you've finished at the bottom - allowing that leftwards sweep to counter-balance the erect ear.

Do you have more to show us....... ?

   Mike,
Thanks very much for the positive (and funny) feedback! I admire your work greatly and I referenced your site frequently during Watson. The association with Sherlock Holmes didn't even cross my mind until this forum commented on it!
I do have a couple more drawings to post and will do so once I can get to scanning them (three kids and my day job.) I am fairly new to pencil as a finished medium but I become more "hooked " with every one I complete.
Thanks to all again for providing a much needed boost to "keeping at it".

Kevin
