"Cocker Puppies!"

Hi Mike and all. Glad to be here, what a wonderful forum. Thought I'd try to post a drawing (hoping it shows up!) I did inbetween doing that horse drawing (am still working on that one). These are some of my puppies (old pic) that I used to raise. The squished one became an American champion and also the moose on your right. About 6x7 or so, using just a B mechanical pencil, on Utrecht smooth bristol.

Hi Shirl, lovely image of yanks (as we call them downunder -American Cocker Spaniels) they look so soft, I can smell that "puppy breath".
I would put some more darks into the background, it will really kick them forward, and add some fine dark lines here and there through the fringes for more definition. Also darken just where mouth opens, and under paws,....... maybe slightly heavier shading.....depends on the effect your after.....

What an absolutely delightful bunch!!

And what a lovely drawing (of course!). Unless it has lost definition in the scan I agree with Lynne, you do need some darker tones in there. The left-hand head rather takes the attention because it is drawn with stronger tones. It has a presence that the others lack. I'd love to see them all brought up to the same level so they all share in the limelight. The same applies to that fat paw on the squished one's head!

Thanks, and certainly agree with you both. I find it so difficult to do light-colored subjects. These puppies are cream-colored and in the light (except for the left puppy's face). I actually made them darker than they are, hunting for something to add darker values:-) . I can certainly darken the background for starters.

One thing that I did and enjoy the results, is use a 3H to soften all the edges.

Thank you Vickie. They're definitely cuddly!

Here's what I've done per your suggestions (and a better scan). I love these little "Yankee" puppies

Hey Shirl, These beautiful babes have improved a lot with your adjustments.......now I'm all puppy cluckie......I've always loved tail waggin' little yanks.......but the stripping and grooming involved, to have them looking spot on........I think I should go groom a beardie and "snap out of it"....LOL.....

Hi Shirl, you did a fantastic job!!!! Those puppies are so cute!!! I wish I could pick them up to play with. Besides the background, could you tell me where you darkend the puppies if you still remember & what number pencil you used? Thanks In Advance.

Must agree, not much cuter than a cocker puppy! But you're correct, lots and lots of grooming involved, plus many health problems. I have only one now and he's 12 years old. Probably my last too.

(I think this scan is a tad too dark.)

Toby, I darkened almost the entire background, under their feet, around their faces and all shady areas. Did a little work on the foot on the squished puppy. I used almost entirely a B lead mechanial pencil and 3H to soften any sharp edges.

Thanks all,

Shirl

I'm really impressed that you did this with a B & 3H mechanical pencil. Thanks for the info.

Toby
