"a lynx ..finished.....almost"
hello to all art papa members...this is my 1st w-i-p in this forum im going to try and talk about this drawing as much as i am drawing it..that way you will know exactly what im doing even if its wrong...wich is totally impossible because ive never made a mistake while drawing before...<"totally kidding. but anyhow here is my 1st step...i printed out this lynk aprox 8x10 inches..but im only going to use enough to fill a 5x7 frame i graphed it with centimeter squares ..and done the same to my paper. ive seen people draw without using a graph that are dead on the money..but im not that accurate so i use one for proportion and mesuring so i can figure out where i should be the best that i can. i havent started doing anything yet so i better get busy,..ill be up til about 8 or 9 my time with this.

well the 1st thing i did was kind of look the photo over a little and looked for the whitest part of it,..under his eyes especially his right eye..seems to be the whitest part...so that means that i can probably shade other areas darker then what they apear to be but just barely...like under his mouth it looks like a pretty light area but its not as white as under his eyes...so one layer of light 2h should bring it down enough before i add details to it....i started my line drawing some on his ear...just barely enough to outline shapes..but not to make them permanent ...in his ear wich ive started on..i just barely outlined a few parts that apear really white and shaded from the dark into the light. i try to be as accurate as i can with the line drawing in each square comparing to the photo, i added a little white peice on the top of his ear because im pretty sure they have a small duff on the top of their ears wich doesnt show in the photo but i want to try to show them if i can

i forgot one thing...after i got done finding most of the hard lines and dark shapes in the top part of his head..i took a little lighter pencil..an "f" and lightly shaded over all of it...later ill pick out some highlights.....i just did that so the stuff under his eyes will stand out better once i get to them

That's an interesting system you have there. And very direct -- straight from source to final product. In the days when I used the grid method I'd copy (or enlarge) twice. First to convert photo source to line, then I'd spend time reworking the line drawing, looking for optical errors, opening or shutting mouths, altering expressions and so on...... then I'd square up again and copy to the final drawing surface.
Alternatively I'd use the grid to enlarge to the final size (onto drafting paper) then modify the line drawing as described. Finally I'd use a home made graphite "carbon paper" (see http://www.sibleyfineart.com?tips003.htm for details) to transfer the line to my paper. This way I could hinge the line drawing over the drawing itself so it could be dropped down at any time if I lost my way.
What a wide range of methods we all use. I'm looking forward to seeing this one grow

ive read up on some of that at your site, someday i will have to give it a go.,...one thing i also want to figure out how to is size two picures together,so i can try and create realistic fantasy,...like a horse body attached to the upper 1/2 of a human so far i havent figured out how i would make it look natural,..its just an idea i have for a drawing in the future.

ok ive been back on this for about an hour..im just kind of taking my time ,.milking this one,.....i was thinking last night that if someone was handed a dollar bill to draw,..they would probably look at it close and copy all the small details in it just the way they apear because a dollar isnt actually an object animal/person/car,..its just a bunch of lines and shapes....but drawing from a photo of something your mind always want to add what it thinks it is...such as little hairs,...but in a photograph of hairs taken from a distance away all of those hairs group together as small shapes wich are still a pain in the **** to draw to say the least.,...but its just one of the many strange things i think about in my hours of practice. i havent started on his eyes yet im staying away from them because i have a bad habbit of speeding up after they are done.

.the ouline of his eyes look a little shaky right now but ill do some reshaping before i go any farther on them. i dont draw many furry animals because they are made up of the one thing i dont like drawing the most----HAIR but its helping me build discipline

Well jim, it's been a while since I have been here and I can't get over how much you've gained in skill and confidence. When I last wrote I had put a dog on here and you told me then you'd love to draw them but were really nervous about your abilities. I thought your wolf was exceptional and the lynx is showing loads of promise. Which grade pencils are you using and paper? It really is true that it's all practice, practice, practice. Nice one.
