"Alexei Antonov. Old masters style, still lifes, portrait"

I was born in Russia in 1957, and I've been trying both hands (I'm ambidextrous) at art ever since. I can remember my self from the age of two, and when I was three, I was the terror of my mother's make-up kit, as I loved to draw murals on the wallpaper with her lipstick. All through my childhood I continued drawing, and in high school, though I left much to be desired in my other classes, I excelled in art and singing. I think that I was not a good student in other areas, because I prefer to teach than to be taught. Eventually though, I learned to learn.

I am showing here 3 close up shots of my studio, and several close up details shots based on 30x40 oil painting on canvas ("Ants' paradise" ).

i was impressed enough by your control of the paint to join this forum and spend 90 minutes cursing at my scanner. im not going to presume to critique the paintings.

im an art grad school drop out from an artistic family. i speak russian. i was a trader in the 90s, a sell out i guess. now im 30 and the death of my artist mother and great aunt has made me get serious.

i dont agree with everything in your philosophy, but i do agree about the classical music, at least while youre drawing/painting. jazz is good too, in my opinion. some of the things you write in your "charge" remind me of david or ingres' attitudes. i think that there is infinite range for expression as long as one can control exactly what one is doing.

but for now, i am looking to master the form, and i think you can help me. please take a look at my portfolio if you get the chance. i should have 10 drawings and 10 paintings up by tomorrow am, if my damn scanner would just cooperate. im including a graphite of two skulls from life, 20 x 24.

mr antonov,

i bought the teaching zone for the still life. in the hour or so it took me to flip through it, it solved several problems i've had with my oil paintings. you've saved me hours, and the lives of many inncoent paintbrushes.

i'm not sure that knowlede is available outside of europe anymore. at least i haven't been able to find it. freely, i mean. ok, i guess 25 bucks wasnt free, but still, pretty close.

im going to scrap many works in progress and start them over. its not a total loss, as i solved the compositional and draftsmanship issues already, so i can get right to the application of y0ur techniques. ill start with one simple still life and a head study. if the head study goes well, i may try your techniques out large scale.

one question. you are blending with fingers...with flake white?

also, along those lines, why wouldnt one use flake white as a prime, rather than the gesso/paste combo. drying time?

thanks/spaseebo bolshoi

Your technique is almost too good to be true!

I would like to comment on the yellow flowers in the painting. They seem to be less developled compared to the other parts of the painting. More specifically they lack gloss/shine that would make them seem fresh, alive.

Again, as i mentioned in other posts, I am commenting using my first impressions. I know very little about technique.

I hope my comments are helpful, or at least interesting.

Best,

Zeke
