1. "RE: use of fixative"

you must use some sort of fixative, even if you frame the drawing immediately. there are many kinds. i find that most aerosol fixatives dont really work that well, and the aerosol things have a tendency to clog, which necessitates vigilance on the part of the fixer to make sure he/she doesnt accidentally ruin a drawing with large yellow globs of fixative. if you use aerosol fixative, always test it on a blank piece of newsprint to make sure it is coming out as a fine mist, with no droplets. you can unclog the this by soaking it in a mixture of hot water with a drop or two of vinegar. remember to rinse it in clean water and dry it before you use it.

i personally prefer blowing fixative on myself. the aerosols and fumes are not really an issue, and i can control how much i want on. certain parts of a drawing neeed, in my opinion, a custom application of fixative which the blow on method is the best for.you can buy a blower and fixative liquid at a "pro" type art store or online.

hope this helps.

I always use a workable fixative! Beware though it WILL change the texture of your work. Sometimes for that very reason I will appy it to a drawing where the paper just doesn't have enough tooth for what I am doing. I use an aresol can for mine but I ALWAYS spray some cardboard befor spraying my work. When the work is complete I spray it with a permanent fixative to seal the drawing.

Yes, it is workable. You CAN erase a bit once your work is sprayed. It really seems to help put some tooth on my Canson smooth Bristol board and on smooth clayboard when I'm working on that. I havn't used it on anything else. The permanent IS in fact permanent. Once applied your stuck, no touch ups after that.

Stephanie, what do you use for a permanent fixative? I always use the "workable" stuff as a final fixative. Am I doing something wrong?

Bill,
I'll have to go look at the can <right now I'm too lazy to get off my tukus> It is something I just started using and it's as good as varnish! Once this is on only god or mother nature could remove the graphite!
