"Melissa Merritt's Portfolio"

Hello! I am an older teenager with very little training in art. - I've taken no lessons, but my family has given me tips along the way.

I have always loved to doodle and draw. Some of my other loves are reading and writing fiction and playing piano. I also like to watch TV, create web-sites and surf the internet.

Here is a photo of myself.

Here is a drawing I did when I was 13 years old of an author named Frank Peretti. I was using a charcoal paper and regular household-use pencils.

I'm not sure exactly when I drew this one, but I believe it was in 1998 when I was 14. It is from an Elsie Dinsmore book illustration (an etching). The etching had vines coming down behind Elsie (the figure in the front), but I didn't draw them because I thought it was too distracting (and hard). I added a bit of fog around the people in the background so they would be less prominent.

I used a simple sketch paper and regular house-hold use pencils.

4. "Oilily Girl"

This is a drawing of a young lady I copied from an Oilily ad in a magazine. I drew it from the ages of 14-15. I decided not to finish it, and left the outline sketch at the bottom, which I think actually makes for an interesting effect.

I used the same paper and pencils as the Elsie Dinsmore drawing.

Hey, Melissa--really solid stuff there, especially since you were pulling off hat kind of rendering at such a young age with no training. Keep up the good work, and make a point of studying--I think if you have that level of talent naturally, study will make your technique go through the stratosphere. Way to go!
