Giver of Strength is a study in growth. The two attachements show the same horse. However, one of the portraits was drawn only in pencil. The other portrait is a combination of charcoal and graphite after using JD Hillberry's wonderful book.
Giver of Strength gets its name from the Job 39:19 "Do you give the horse his strength? Do you clothe his neck with a mane?"
The piece is currently owned by a racehorse breeder in Texas.

Well I'm new here but great progress was made between this pictures. Which one of J.D. Hillberry do you recomend I'm interested in pencil and charcoal drawings.
Welcome aboard Richard! J.D. Hillberry is the moderator of this site. You'll see his work posted on this page under self portraits. More of his work can be seen at his web site. His web address is www.jdhillberry.com. The one book of his that I am aware of is called "Drawing Realistic Textures in Pencil." From this one resource you will get numerous clever tips to improve the realism of your artwork. His book introduced me to charcoal, which is rapidly becoming my favorite medium. I look forward to seeing you post some of your own works.
