im no expert, but i know some. i think the solution may not be in some innovative stretcher design, but in a way to move your backdrops. taking risks with the integrity of the backdrop should be a last soultion. have you thought about a winch and pulley system, with say 3 tracks so you can just turn a handle, and a braided steel cable does the work for you?
if that is impractical, (ie not enough headroom in the studio) (who has 10+ foot ceiling these days, except in ny) let me know what you think your woodworking skills are (on one to 10 scale) what tools you have. there are ways you can create a lighter frame, but there will be some risk of warping/uneven tension down the road. of course, assuming not too much humidity or exposure to freezing temperatures, you will have several years of no problems. hopefully.
but i would consider a winch/track ssystem. if possible. you can find plans on interent, or we could design it. simple. of course, youll need a good drill (renting an air compressor nail gun is not a bad idea too)and hopefully your walls are drywall rather than plaster.
