"transparency confusion"

I am painting using oil paints, which I have done before, but this is my first time trying to paint wet on wet. I have used some black gesso on part of my canvas and let it dry completely. I am to put a transparency over top of the black gesso only before I go any further (and liquid white on the "un"gessoed part) but I am not sure how to go about creating the transparent paint. I know which of the oil paints are "transparent" but I am pretty sure I don't just put one of those over top...do I add an odorless thinner to it as well? Or am I to add a different type of oil (i.e. linseed etc)? Your input is very much appreciated!
