moose Painting based on 1st video instructions.

Well, here goes. I've got my teflon jacket on and believe I'm ready for some feedback. Hopefully it won't be to harsh. This is my 14th still life painting. I am open for ideas and critique concerning all aspects of this work. Composition, color, form, and modeling(?). I specifically used the 7 layer technique as taught by Mr. Antonov. How'ld I do?

Nice work moose!
Good to see you sticking to the technique. Interesting how you used the same compositional elements as Mr.Antonov's painting; great idea for referencing color problems. Your drapery is executed great, and the pealed lemon looks delicious. In my paintings water drops pose a problem for me so I just stay away from them. If not used properly the can look placed instead of random natural occurrences. From what I can see in this Jpeg yours seem successful. The elliptical of the plate looks a bit oblong, and your signature is a little distracting being so intense on the dark background, but other than that awesome piece and I look forward to seeing some more!!!

Welcome moose!
I feel that we have topic to discuss. I do not have any corrections to the composition.
The painting was not lighted properly and that's why the left part is too dark. It is better to take pictures of the paintings outside and in the shade, not under direct sun. It gives very nice and not concentrated light.
If there is a chance please show us the close up of the circled fragments.
Alexei

I also can add that it is more appropriate to the white fabric closer to the edge of the painting, lead it in the artificial shade

Thanks for all the feedback, this indeed is a learning experience. The subtle changes that have been recommended will make a good painting great! I'm going to attempt the upload of the closeup, not sure if the quality will be good enough to critique by. Thanks very much again for the advice.

Moose:
You did fantastic job!
Pay a special attention to the direction of light and to the falling shadows on the drops.

Lemon body framework have to be done by line-up sparkling ingredients of the surface
To paint the dark part of water drops, use the color of the nearby darker tone of the surface.

Warm reflexes in the shades are too colorful.
The folds of the fabric have their own laws of refraction of the form. The best sources for me were always Durer and Engr. Please, don't ask me what exact illustrations, but on the other hand, let us know if you will find something on Internet.

I feel like I'm living at the Atelier of the Ecology of Culture! All I can say is Wow!
The advice and examples showed me how much I need to learn. The water droplet shadow direction (i just flat missed this), how to improve the flesh of the lemon (I struggled in how to accomplish this and quit trying), toning down the reflected fireside light. I am alittle uncertain about how to correctly light my subject matter. Any additional advice or diagram of how far away and angle of attack would be great. The lemon next to the pear and the bowl do need construction improvements (plate is oblong)(lemon appears squashed, but I wasn't sure how to correct it). It's time now to find my onion and linseed oil for the corrections layer! Again, thanks so much for the advice. Thankyou for such a great web-site!

Hi, Moose:
I will come up sometimes soon with the lighting set up diagram.
I wouldn't recommend to make construction corrections on this stage. Of course it is up to you,but right now in the museums we see all the corrections in construction, which were done after the layers were completely dried. The thing is that single correction layer will become transparent very soon (50-70 years). Maybe better solution would be to start another painting and keep this one for the studying source. I don't know.

Just to mention: this discussion is worth more than the months of lessons I took elsewhere. Thanks for sharing your wisdom, all of you.

I'm an admirer of Maestro Antonov because he is a great teacher of the Classical painting technique. I have his two videos and I'm about to try to use his portrait and Still-Life technique one of these days. I just wanted to say that this kind of critique from Maestro Antonov is very inspiring and tremendously valuable for all of us who are trying to learn how to make realistic paintings.
