"New to watercolors..."

Hi, I've been browsing these forums for a while before diving
in. I've recently gotten into watercolor portraits (I
draw pencil portraits). It really is my favorite type
of paint, I love the beautiful fluid look, the texture,
and how easy it is to work with. So far I have only done
2 paintings, and in monochrome. I love working in monochrome
but I am also hoping to explore colors. Last weekend I
went to Borders and looked through watercolor technique
books, so now I realize what I did wrong in the second
painting, why the guitar did not come out smoothly.
Here is my first portrait that I did in early 2000
when I was 14:
