Well a bunch of people on another forum convinced me try my hand at a watercolour portrait so here I go.

I still have absolutely no idea what I''m doing so all comments & critiques are encouraged!

Here are my first two progress pics:

Hi Nancy,

I have no idea what you're doing either - sorry, I am of absolutely no help to you, but I am watching your progress with interest.

It looks like you're applying colour washes in layers, yes? - it looks good so far!! Is this a commission or something personal for yourself?

Oh Becca - Thanx for thinking this might be a commissioned piece (my goal is to eventually be able to offer watercolours - but I suspect that day is still a long way off!)

I think I layering washes, but I'm really not sure. Just doing what seems like it needs to be done!

The watercolour process is so radically different that what I'm used to...can't "pull-out" my highlights like with charcoal so I've had to plan them a lot earlier.

Also it is really bugging me that I can't finish the eyes yet! I can't put in the lashes until everything around the eye is finished! I usually don't relax until I have the eyes completed so I'm still pretty nervous on this one.

BTW it's a picture of my son (taken years ago!), after his bath. It's one of my favourite pics because it shows this birthmark that he has on his forehead (not sure if/ or how I'll be able to include it) which is now covered with hair, but is a very personal link to him - because the doctor said it was caused by him resting on my backbone!

Hope I haven't messed it up yet!

Hi Nancy,
Looking pretty good! You are doing the right thing by layering washes - it is a slow process of building up colour. You can also introduce other colour/contrast colour washes in this build up -I always practice on a scrap bit of paper to see the build up first. Because watercolour is a transparent medium you can get some really lovely results and shadow effects. You may consider doing this contrast colour wash for the birthmark in the final stages (try it out elsewhere first!)

You CAN "pull-out" highlights - if you are very careful and your watercolour is still wet enough. Always keep a clean white tissue or paper towel nearby, flood an area with colour, then 'blot' off the wet pigment. Be careful not to scrub at the work or you end up ruining the surface and have little paper 'spitwads' clinging to everything. This technique can also be a rescue if you accendentially apply to dark a wash.

Watercolour is fun - I like the freedom of it, but sometimes I lose control of it and it turns out a disater! I also tend to use a very limited pallette of colours - letting the media mix and create the full spectrum for me from only 3 or 4 pure colours. I posted a new work of mine on this forum so you can see my watercolour style - mine still needs a lot of work and more practice!

Hello Everyone!

Got busy and couldn't do much there for awhile. I didn't like the original composition (I thought it was too distracting), and I wanted more of a "safely cocooned" nighttime feel to it so I cropped it. Don't let the border full you - I know it's far from finished (I have more building to do in the face and towel wrap and of course the eyelashes!)- just wanted to see how it'd look with a black mat.

I can't seem to get a deep black in the background. Will I have to go multi-media on this and add some colored pencil or pastel to build that up? I don't want to - but I can't seem to get the background dark enough. Am I just working too fast? Maybe not allowing it enough time to dry first?

Hi Nancy,

I liked your composition before you cropped it, probably because I'm getting tired of doing portraits from the shoulders up!

BTW - I've checked out Wet Canvas and decided to join just in case ArtPapa really does go down. Just waiting for them to "approve" me. I'm registered under the name R_McLean since there was already a Becca. See ya over there!

It's odd because I am at the same point right now...usually including more and more in my portraits, but in this one I found it too distracting (and I wasn't confident in my ability to properly shade and define the hand).

That's good you joined...just in case, but I think ArtPapa has been operating smoother lately....maybe things are being resolved.
